Letters are of great importance in understanding the meanings of sentences and phrases, depending on their position and the connotations they carry. Given their significance in grammatical analysis, grammarians have dedicated entire chapters to them, and legal theorists have devoted specific sections to them in their works. Among these letters are conjunctions, whose effects on speech vary in general, depending on the letter's meaning. One of the most important is the letter "waw" (و), which occurs frequently in speech and is the primary conjunction. Scholars differ on its meaning: does it indicate sequence or conjunction? To understand the value of this letter in deriving legal rulings, and the significant impact its meanings have on the differing viewpoints of legal scholars, it is essential to understand how its meaning varies according to its usage in Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions in particular, and in the Arabic language in general. Because scholars differed in their interpretations of its meaning, their deductions of legal rulings related to their beliefs, worship, and transactions also varied. Among these issues, divorce, which directly impacts family life, is a primary concern. Therefore, I aimed to clarify the scholars' opinions on a specific aspect of this word's meaning: does it denote conjunction or sequence? I then presented the most important evidence for each school of thought.
